Just when you thought turntable manufacturing legend Technics was resting on its collective laurels, and was basking in the stellar press surrounding the newest iterations of its venerable classic – the SL-1200 – in the 1200G, and 1200GR, they announce a new reference model for the company’s top slot: The SP-10R.
With European consumer-electronics mega show IFA 2017 (Internationale Funkausstellung) just kicking off in Berlin, early news is just trickling out regarding the new turntable, but Technics put out a press release calling the new SP-10R the company’s “most premium analog, direct-drive turntable to date,” and claiming the lowest signal-to-noise ratio (92dB), and best rotational stability (0.015 per cent wow & flutter) of any turntable in the world.
With new digital, and analog tech stuffed under the hood, the SP-10R features a seven kilogram, brass, aluminum, and rubber-compound platter, new core-less, direct-drive motor, two-sided, rotor-drive system, and reference-class, low-noise separate mains power supply.
Announcements regarding the tonearm, and cartridge to be used with the SP-10R are still forthcoming according to other news outlets. The original SP-10 released in 1970 was the world’s first direct-drive turntable, and saw extensive use in the broadcast industry around the planet, (as well as my good friend Bobby’s living room). Interesting. A very beautiful set of components. The rubber part of the turntable must be a mat. The tonearm must also be a completely separate unit. $15K and up perhaps the price point?
How much this gonna be like
I like the clean look. However, what a waste of money if even a $50 cd player or a $100 bd player from any major company is sonically superior.
I guess you’re either kidding or haven’t compared your $50 CD player to a good analog system.
How is a cd player going to be sonically superior to a turntable at any price? Not happening.
