The Story

The Andover Audio Model One is really four devices all built into one concise casework, those being: a turntable, preamp, amplifier, and stereo speakers. The turntable portion in the Model One is a custom made component manufactured for Andover Audio by Pro-Ject Turntables. Specifically the turntable platform used in the Model One is considered a variation of the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Esprit SB.

The Model One works as an amplified loudspeaker system integrated with a turntable because of Andover Audio’s Isogroove™ technology that eliminates vibration feedback. This allows the Model One’s loudspeakers to be integrated directly underneath the turntable.

Features on the turntable portion include a carbon fiber tonearm, Ortofon 2M Silver Moving Magnet cartridge, acrylic platter, and Andover’s own electronic speed control which has the usual 33/45/78 presets, but also a unique feature in variable speed tailoring.

The Model One (turntable/pre/amp/speaker in one box) is $2,500 USD, and on display with a 100ct record storage unit which adds $300 USD, and integrated subwoofer base under that which retails for $800 USD. As picture the system is $3,600 USD.

The Subwoofer from Andover Audio for the Model One uses two 10-inch woofers in a sealed enclosure turntable is crossovered in at 80Hz frequency, where it can blend with the Turntable’s four 3.5-inch aluminum cone mid-woofers and two AMT tweeters.

The amplifier section of the Model One uses two 150-watt Class-D amplifiers for true bi-amping. Inputs include a full digital DAC driven complement, along with phonostage and line-in RCA inputs for all kinds of analog sources. Also included is Bluetooth 4.2 AptX, and a dedicated input for WiFi streaming devices.

Controls are menu driven and listening modes abound. Listening modes include stereo and mono, but also feature custom parametric tunings for changes in room dispersion. Think wide and then really wide sound settings.

The new Andover Audio Spinbase ($300 USD) is a paired down box version of the Model One with a single power/volume knob on the front, and flexible vinyl and analog inputs on the rear.

Yes, the new Spinbase is designed to be a base for a turntable, but it could also work with a CD player or other audio devices, or sit on a desktop under a computer monitor, or even integrate into a component rack on it’s own isolated shelf as long as the sides of the rack were open to the room.

The same Isogroove™ technology used in the Model One that eliminates feedback is also included in the Spinbase, and allows it to be placed directly underneath a turntable, serving as both an elegant platform and a wide-range loudspeaker system.

The Sound

Does as advertised, and after a long weekend of listening to over 50+ systems — at no time did I feel that I left the realm of hi-fi. For these audiophile ears I am duly impressed with both the sound and technical claims of both the Andover Audio Model One, and the new Spinbase.
