The Occasional Podcast: Two-Ways and Integrateds – Downsizing Without Compromising

The Occasional Podcast: Now on iTunes!

I think most audiophiles can find appreciation for big systems with big sound. Anyone who has been to a top notch movie theater knows that big can easily equate to better with the right set of circumstances. But what about smaller, more compact systems? This week’s episode of The Occasional Podcast tackles a beautiful sub genre of home listening that welcomes all with lighter price tags, but still can be pushed to ample limits within the reasonable boarders of two way speakers and integrateds.

Part-Time Audiophile‘s editor-in-chief Marc Phillips is no stranger to the combination. His experience extends deep, further than just his huge completion of reviews, but also a real love for the simplicity and compact form factor that accompanies a good set of two-way loudspeakers paired to a source/amp solution. In this conversation, along with host Brian Hunter, Marc dissects the operation, provides tips, tricks and recommendations along the way. The show even finishes up with a few GOAT options for those who just like to ponder “how far can we take this thing”.

The Occasional Podcast is making its way though season 5 with two way speakers, beginning with our sit down with last week’s Grado Labs and even audio legend Mike Moffat from the season opener. Also available for download is last season’s interviews with Heinz Lichtenegger, president of Pro-Ject. You can also check out Getting Started With Vinyl Playback, The Occasional Beginner’s Guide To Digital Audio and our take on the “Loudness Wars” which has been a highlight for the summer. Season three had interviews with such audio legends as Jeff Joseph, Bill Dudleston, Nelson Pass and even Rob Watts. We had an amazing response from our show with engineer Dave McNair exploring all things Mastering, and if you haven’t checked out our beginners guide to reel-to-reel playback, it’s definitely worth a listen.
