The Occasional Podcast Asks: What Is British Hi-Fi?

The Occasional Podcast: Now on iTunes!

This week’s episode of The Occasional Podcast features interviews with Andrew Jones, Rob Watts, Mike Moffat and Johan Coorg. The topic? What exactly is British Hi-Fi? How did it become a thing, is it still a thing?

As with many perspectives in high fidelity audio, “things” can often be somewhat vague in nature. What does your favorite stereo really sound like? We use words tapped from other senses to help describe the phenomenon, but in some cases, this intangible spills over to more than just your typical audiophile reviewer cliché. Brian and PTA editor-in-chief Marc Phillips help dissect the situation and make the whole scene a little bit more tangible in this week’s show, bringing a little history, a little opinion and some love for the British Hi-Fi gear along for the ride.

The Occasional Podcast is slowly rounding the bend on Season 5 with this week’s exploration of British Hi-Fi, but don’t miss our conversation from last week’s revisited interview with the late legendary recording engineer Al Schmitt, or even our interview with digital audio designer Mike Moffat from the season opener. Also available for download is last season’s interviews with Heinz Lichtenegger, president of Pro-Ject. You can also check out Budgeting – From Entry Level To High EndGetting Started With Vinyl Playback, The Occasional Beginner’s Guide To Digital Audio and our take on the “Loudness Wars” which has been a highlight for the season. Season three had interviews with such audio legends as Jeff JosephBill Dudleston, Nelson Pass and even Rob Watts.

We had an amazing response from our show with engineer Dave McNair exploring all things Mastering, and if you haven’t checked out our beginners guide to reel-to-reel playback, it’s definitely worth a listen.
