In the spirit of curiosity, I want to present the Laufer Teknik “The Note,” a $32,500/pair line array that features approximately 10,000 one-inch drivers suspended by a single thread!
Okay, no, that’s not what happened here, but the illusion was pretty compelling a variety of fronts. One, there are a lot of drivers on those noodles and, two, the sound here was crazy (crazy good). My favorite bit was walking in between the two precariously slender Laufer Teknik columns … and having the stereo sound field follow me around with creepy stability. Nifty!

Paired here with an SVS SB3000 subwoofer, The Note, here an “Apple White” (my words), is 2″ wide, 2.5″ deep, and 87″ tall, weighing in at 40lbs per side. That’s impressive for something with an “omni” sound field.
A pair of Benchmark AHB2 amplifiers ($3299 each), with a pair of Benchmark DAC3 B ($1799), an “Elephant” Memory Player from Laufer Teknik ($12500), a set of “Liquid” speaker cables, also from Laufer Teknik ($8500/set), more intereconnects from Benchmark, and a DEQx HDP4 processor (note: new products are coming this fall).
I have no idea who this setup is for, but it was interesting! Those Laufer Teknik line arrays do disappear, and the rest of the gear was relatively modest in price (comparatively). With the insertion of quality room DSP, I can imagine many impossible things becoming possible, but this was a fun demo.
